For months, Kristil Krug believed that a former boyfriend from more than 20 years earlier had returned and become dangerously obsessed with her. She received disturbing emails and messages claiming he was watching her, tracking her appointments and threatening to get rid of her husband. Terrified, Kristil documented every interaction in a detailed spreadsheet, contacted police and installed security cameras around her Colorado home. Meanwhile, her husband, Daniel Krug, acted concerned and pretended that he wanted to protect his wife and children. But investigators later uncovered the horrifying truth: Daniel was the stalker. Prosecutors proved that he created fake identities, used burner phones and sent the threatening messages himself. He even photographed his own car and movements to make it appear that someone was following him too. Investigators said he wanted Kristil to believe they were facing a common enemy while their marriage was falling apart. On December 14, 2023, after Kristil returned home from taking their children to school, Daniel ambushed and murdered her inside their garage. He then attempted to manufacture an alibi by scheduling messages from Kristil’s phone, disabling the home-security system and covering the doorbell camera with tape. But the digital evidence exposed him. A fake account was connected to his workplace, the burner phones traveled alongside his personal phone and investigators discovered disturbing searches on his devices from the night before the murder. In April 2025, a jury convicted Daniel Krug of first-degree murder, two stalking charges and criminal impersonation. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, followed by an additional nine and a half years. Kristil wasn’t being stalked by someone from her past.
