You cannot make repair entirely about how bad YOU feel for hurting someone. Yes, express your apology and your remorse. Yes, take accountability and acknowledge the impact it had on them. Yes, share your feelings and intentions AND make sure there’s room for them in this conversation. 👉But the person who was hurt should not be managing the emotional experience of the person who hurt them. Repair should never turn into paragraphs or hours of conversation around your stress or anger that caused you to cause them harm. It should never be about you bringing up all your past and present grievances in that moment. There’s a time and place for those conversations to happen. A reparative conversation after you’ve caused harm isn’t it. And being unwilling to hear their feelings or how much what you said or did impacted them will only leave them feeling unseen, unheard and ultimately unsafe moving forward. One of the things I teach about repair is that accountability requires being able to hear about the impact of your behavior without making that conversation entirely about your own feelings. You can feel guilty and be present for someone else’s pain. You can be uncomfortable and remain curious about their experience. When you’re able to do both, you create room for something that actually helps rebuild connection and the other person feels like their experience matters to you. Have you ever found yourself comforting someone who was supposed to be apologizing to you?👇 #healingtiktok #relationshiptiktok #nervoussystemhealing #traumatok #healthyrelationships
