@well.guide: I went to a party recently and someone there could have been nicer to me — and, she’s also really cool. Her life is pretty amazing (based on everything I see on IG obv). So I felt triggered not only to compare myself to her in that moment, but also felt bad that she wasn’t particularly nice to me. But, instead of ruminating and spiraling, I tried this one thing that has helped me tap out of comparison: what is my water? If you shake a coin in an empty bottle, it will make a LOT of noise. If you shake a coin in a bottle of water, it makes no sound. So it my comparison thoughts are the coin, what’s my water? I reminded myself of the richness of my life. When I can be grounded in the fullness of myself, one person not being nice to me and their lives just don’t feel as important. When your days are structured around things that feel meaningful to you — your own goals, relationships, rhythms, pleasures — you’re not evaluating your life against a blank canvas anymore. You’re evaluating it against something full. Someone else’s life simply has less to attach to, because your attention is already occupied by something real — YOU! A lot of comparison spirals aren’t really about the other person at all — they’re a symptom of contingent self-worth, where your sense of value depends on external markers (achievement, status, aesthetics) rather than something more internally anchored. A full life doesn’t just distract you from comparison; it gives you direct evidence, on your own terms, that your life has value independent of anyone else’s. . . #wellguide #comparisontrap #comparingyourself #emotionalregulation #gratitudepractice
