R.I.P. Moya Brennan. The singer and harpist for new age Celtic folk group Clannad died at home in Donegal last night after living with pulmonary fibrosis. Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin co-founded Clannad with her brothers and uncles, and their self-titled debut was released in 1973. Brennan’s younger sister Eithne, now known as Enya, joined the group in 1980, but left in 1982 for a hugely successful solo career. That same year, Clannad released “Theme From ‘Harry’s Game.’” The haunting theme for a TV series about the Troubles was a top-five hit in both Ireland and the UK (and later became popular in America when it was featured in a Volkswagen commercial). Clannad had another hit with “In A Lifetime,” a 1986 duet between Brennan and Bono. Clannad earned a BAFTA and a Grammy for their lush and ethereal take on Irish folk, and in 1992 Brennan released the first of many solo albums. She contributed to soundtracks for ‘Titanic’ and ‘King Arthur,’ and she also did a lot of philanthropic work, much of it centered around her recovery from addiction and alcoholism.
