We talked with Scott Colom on May 29 at the rally against redistricting in Jackson. Fifty-three days out now. Mississippi has sent two Black men to the Senate. Revels in 1870, Bruce until 1881. Both chosen by the legislature, because senators weren’t popularly elected until 1913. Mississippi voters have never elected a Black senator. Not once. Colom is running against Cindy Hyde-Smith, who has never cleared 55 percent in either of her races. He’s running on the hospitals closing, groceries in the poorest state in the country, and jobs. Every national forecaster rates this Safe Republican. The markets have it 92 to 8. Three weeks ago those same models had Angie Nixon losing to a man who outraised her by more than $15 million. She beat him by 12. Here is what they are not counting. 2023: Reeves beat Presley by 26,619 votes. Closest governor’s race since 1999. Turnout, 42.6 percent. In DeSoto County alone, 14,000 more people voted for Harris in 2024 than voted for Presley in 2023. One county. Half the statewide margin. Registered voters who sat out a state election. That is not a persuasion problem. That is an attendance problem. And if this race is as settled as they say, ask why the state keeps changing the rules. A SHIELD Act in April, letting Mississippi mail people already registered a letter demanding they prove citizenship to stay on the rolls. Lifetime disenfranchisement under Section 241. No early voting, when nearly every other state has it. And after Democrats flipped three seats last November under court-ordered majority-Black maps and broke a 13-year supermajority, the state is now holding hearings on redrawing those maps. Callais does not require Mississippi to redraw anything. They watched a map produce a result they didn’t like. Nobody builds a levee where the water never reaches. The forecasters are reading polls. The Legislature is reading the same math we are, and acting on it. That is not discouraging. That is the scouting report.
