Tempo in chess is the key that unlocks great opening play. Aron Nimzowitsch gave us a template for understanding what great play looks like in the opening. Moves that help you achieve central control, piece development and castling are considered gain of tempo, while moves that do otherwise are considered losses of tempo which can lead to bad positions.
