yes it is!! kin and kinning started off as terms used by otherkins (not just fictionkins). the mainstream media found out about fictionkins around 2015, and since then the word kin has been watered down to mean relating to a character. so technically, it means both depending on the context, as many people have said in the comments!

The term kin came from watering down fictionkinity and I hate how we’ve just allowed them to separate it and take that from us, so I refuse to accept that’s it’s considered a different thing now. I acknowledge that’s what people use it for but it is not that in my book
