@inventionontt: Original Video Credit: X/RUG2483 Built as a compact prototype, this unusual transmission places a magnet-lined outer ring around a spherical inner assembly. As the input shaft rotates, magnetic interaction between the two sections transfers torque through the mechanism rather than relying on conventional interlocking gear teeth. Repositioning the outer ring changes how its magnets couple with different regions of the spherical assembly, allowing the prototype to demonstrate three distinct transmission configurations. The magnetic fields provide the torque-transmitting interaction, although parts of this particular prototype can still physically contact its surrounding structure because of its construction and tolerances. Magnetic gearing is valuable to explore because torque can be transferred without the tooth-to-tooth contact found in conventional gears, potentially reducing wear and eliminating lubrication at the magnetic interface. This spherical concept also demonstrates how magnetic coupling can be adapted to transmit rotation between shafts positioned at different angles. No copyright infringement intended. Looks incredibly inefficient and also that’s just a CVT with magnets but cool

no torque. slipping under load will be as easy as it is to change gear.

this is very cool unfortunately you are going to get absolutely zero torque out of this bad boy

Beautiful design idea. No clutch required to shift gears.
But it slips and it rattles. Also it lacks compactness, in case you want more gears, which can only be achieved by increasing the diameter of the central sphere.

I think the main benefit of this is to break the physical mechanical connection, so nothing breaks if it temporarily jams. I do not see much other upsides to this 😅
