I get that this is how electricity is always explained, but I've never understood how alternating current (AC) electricity can have a neutral wire. Doesn't AC flow BOTH directions (flipping direction 60 times every second)? Doesn't that mean that sometimes the electricity is coming in through the "hot" wire and sometimes going out through the "hot" wire, switching 60 times every second? If we used DC current, then I could understand the concept of a "hot" and a "neutral, but with AC I can't seem to reconcile the concepts in my head.

School science in the 70’s in the uk taught us to wire a plug, the wires were coloured blue, red or brown and green. Blue is left it has an l in it neutral , red or brown goes to the right they have an r in it live or the dangerous one, green goes to earth. 🤪🤪🤪

Technically the “neutral” is the grounded conductor and the “ground” is the grounding conductor (per the NEC). Both should be bonded at either the distribution transformer or the first disconnect, allowing fault current to travel back to the transformer pulling more than enough current to trip the breaker. Also this all runs on alternating current (AC). Fun lesson though! 😁👍
