The ECU modifies the valve position to maintain engine speed stably according to temperature, electrical load, air conditioning, and other operating conditions. When the IAC presents dirt, carbon deposits, wear, or mechanical damage in the valve seat, spring, or internal mechanism, the airflow can become restricted or excessively open. This can cause high RPMs, unstable throttle, too low RPMs, engine shutdown when stopping, or difficulty maintaining cold throttle. The bypass tube and throttle body should also be checked before condemning the valve. A faulty IAC mainly alters the amount of air entering the engine during idle, while the ECU tries to compensate by modifying fuel and ignition timing. Therefore, a RPM failure should not be immediately interpreted as an air-fuel mixture problem.
