@naaackers: This is why the "Just use linux" comments are more of a troll than helpful, because now matter what I pick, it's always going to be wrong, and there is always a different distro to be using. #linux #pc #windows #homelab

I'm tired of the "just switch to Linux" crowd. They live in a tech bubble so cozy they've forgotten one small fact. Normal people just want a computer that works. Set the Mac aside. Find me a regular PC that ships with Linux. I'll wait. So step one of this glorious "switch" is wiping your OS and reinstalling from scratch, which, shockingly, isn't a skill most people were born with. And spare me "it's easy now." It's easy right up until you need a driver, and then the friendly advice becomes "just open the terminal and type…" Ah yes. The terminal. Beloved by everyone who has never used a computer for actual work. Then there's the community. Ask a beginner question and the hazing begins. "Noob." "RTFM." "Did you even search?" Nothing says "welcome" like being mocked for not already knowing the thing you came to learn. Somehow a free operating system became both a personality and a moral high ground. But sure, tell me how superior it is. If Linux is the savior of computing, explain the market share. Decades of "the year of the Linux desktop," and the desktop still hasn't gotten the memo. Maybe it's not that everyone else is stupid. Maybe it's the product.

A fusion reactor will power my car before Linux becomes a good laptop/desktop distro. I’ve been trying Linux since it was released on floppy drives in the 90s. It still sucks

I want to like Linux but the distros I’ve tried in the past are either bad or meh. Windows 11 sucks but at least I know everything will work 99% of the time.

You can argue this stuff till the cows come home, but they’ll never listen. It’s always the wrong distro, somehow have to always and never use the terminal at the same time, easy enough for a grandparent to use, but don’t you dare point out it actually isn’t.

so I've just recently switched to Linux from Windows. I'm a billion percent happy with the switch and most of the time I don't need to go into the command line for my general use. but boy let me tell you the one time that I've had to so far took me like 45 minutes of intense research to figure out what the fuck I was supposed to do. and I'm on Linux mint which is like the most user friendly distro. the only people who say this nonsense are Linux fanatics who have switched so long ago they don't remember what its like to be new to linux. unfortunately they are probably the majority because the people who value simplicity tend to stick with Windows and never switch.

The big problem with using Linux is that it is not a turnkey experience, unlike Windows and Mac. But the great advantage of using Linux is that it is not a turnkey experience, unlike Windows and Mac. Once you understand both sides of the same coin, Linux will make sense.

Just used linux on my laptop and my sound doesn't work. It works, just no sound output through the speakers. First advice I got: "try another distro". Bro, I changed 5 distros, maybe the problem is the distro🫩

It's an OS. I can't remember how many times I had to write commands in the comments prompt to get things working in windows and apps that don't work right of the bat or you have to Google how do I do X in windows 11.

Linux distros are varied and each is used for something different the easiest Linux distro is Ubuntu which has been the most streamlined version of Linux and most sensible Linux users will recommend it as a starter distro for new users. The major problem with Linux is that most active users of Linux are the small minority of elitist Linux users who will tell you that you did something wrong instead of actually helping you or they'll just tell you to just read the documentation of the distro you chose. I just did things via trial and error on a second laptop so I still had a usable laptop if I made a mistake

Linux isn't easy, but not difficult. the "wrong" linux thing is nonsense. if you need a functional system that has no issues use Ubuntu. if you don't mind learning a bit more about it jump to Fedora. but that may never happen and that's still fine. I don't bother with Arch or LFS here.

It's a silly thing to say unless you don't need to easily run compatible software, don't do PC gaming, or want new hardware to just work. That's what Windows is for.
