Released 10 years ago today, 'Teens Of Denial' was Car Seat Headrest's first collection of new material for Matador Records after a prolific string of self-released albums that made bandleader Will Toledo one of the most cultishly beloved fixtures of the early Bandcamp era. Stereogum named it Album Of The Week, calling it "everything great about indie rock collected into one album." One of Toledo's great passions is creating variations on his own work, and he has taken today's anniversary as an opportunity to release an alternate version of the album titled 'Teen Of Denial: Joe's Story.' He developed a more intensive backstory for Joe, his avatar in the Teens Of Denial narrative. Car Seat Headrest then re-recorded the album with producer Steve Fisk, changing lyrics and arrangements, and adding and removing tracks. Some fans who were sent the album early spent the weekend voicing their disapproval online. The removal of all cursing was among the many changes criticized on the Car Seat Headrest subreddit, for example. On Bluesky, the band's Andrew Katz attributed the swearing removal to Toledo’s “deep-dive into his religion.” That comment led to further concerns among parts of the band’s queer fanbase, many of whom connected deeply with Toledo’s writing about his own queer sexuality. Another band member, Ethan Ives, chimed in on Instagram Stories, asserting that “I am not, will never be, a christian.” An associate of Toledo also shared a message from him on the band’s Discord. 'Teen Of Denial: Joe's Story' is out now, and Katz says Car Seat Headrest have a new album in the works too. [📷: Anna Webber]
