@math.visualizations: A pendulum continuously converts gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy and back again. Add a spring, and a third form enters the system: elastic potential energy. In the first two swings, energy shifts between height and speed. When the string becomes a spring, the bob begins to bounce as well as swing. At times, the swinging motion nearly stops while energy is stored in the spring; moments later, that energy returns to the pendulum’s motion. The form of the energy changes, but the total does not. Gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, and elastic potential energy continuously exchange while the system’s total mechanical energy remains constant.
