RIP Coco Tea 🇯🇲 | Calvin George Scott, known professionally as Cocoa Tea, was a celebrated Jamaican reggae artist renowned for his smooth vocals and conscious lyrics. Born on September 3, 1959, in Rocky Point, Clarendon, Jamaica, Cocoa Tea began his musical journey at a young age, recording his first song, “Searching in the Hills,” at just 14. However, it wasn’t until the early 1980s that he gained significant recognition in the reggae scene. His collaboration with producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes led to early hits like “Rocking Dolly” and “I Lost My Sonia,” establishing him as a prominent figure in reggae music. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Cocoa Tea released numerous successful tracks, including “Rikers Island,” “Young Lover,” and “Tune In.” His music often carried messages of love, unity, and social consciousness, resonating with audiences worldwide. In 2008, he released the song “Barack Obama” in support of the then-presidential candidate, showcasing his engagement with contemporary issues. Beyond his recording success, Cocoa Tea was a dynamic live performer. He was a regular at Jamaica’s Reggae Sunsplash festival, performing almost every year since 1987, except in 1989. While specific details about his performance at the Live Superstar’s Extravaganza in 1989 are scarce, it was the second volume of Superstars Extravaganza filmed in Jamaica at Christmas of 1989. Reggae star Freddie McGregor and Big Ship promotions., his consistent presence at major reggae events during that period underscores his significance in the live music scene. Cocoa Tea’s influence extended beyond his music. He founded the Roaring Lion record label, supporting and producing works for other artists, and initiated the annual New Year’s Eve event, Dancehall Jam Jam, in 2003, which ran until 2009. On March 11, 2025, Cocoa Tea passed away at the age of 65 in a Florida hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest. He had been battling lymphoma since 2019 and had also struggled with pneumonia in recent months. His passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans, fellow musicians, and dignitaries, including Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who praised his contributions to reggae music and his enduring legacy. Cocoa Tea is remembered not only for his musical talents but also for his kindness and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on the reggae community and beyond. #coco#cocotea#jamaican#reggae#rasta#80smusic#fypシ゚
