Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Friday that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadorian native living in Maryland who was mistakenly deported, has been returned to the U.S. and will face charges related to transporting undocumented migrants. “Abrego Garcia has landed in the United States to face justice,” the attorney general said at a press conference. “He was a smuggler of humans, and women and children.” The Trump administration admitted it erred by deporting Mr. Abrego Garcia in March to a notorious mega prison in El Salvador, but resisted several court orders, including from the Supreme Court, to “facilitate” his return. The criminal charges provide an off-ramp in the legal saga for the Trump administration, which has repeatedly ruled out bringing him back to the U.S. The two-count indictment, which was filed under seal last month in Tennessee, alleges that Mr. Abrego Garcia participated in a nearly decade-long conspiracy to transport undocumented migrants from Texas to the interior of the country in exchange for thousands of dollars. The charges stem from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee, when police found him driving nine other men in an SUV, all of whom were Hispanic and lacked identification. He has been charged with conspiracy to unlawfully transport illegal aliens for financial gain and unlawful transportation of illegal aliens for financial gain. Attorney General Bondi said if Mr. Abrego Garcia is convicted, he will serve prison time in the U.S. before being deported again. #pambondi #kilmarabregogarcia #deportation #cspan
