Beijing told 1.4 billion people to stop visiting Japan. Osaka lost 2.4 million Chinese tourists, everyone else came instead, and hotel rooms got 21.7% cheaper. China urged its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan, and Osaka took one of the hardest hits in the country. From January to August, Chinese visitors to Osaka fell 61.5%, from about 3.9 million to 1.5 million, according to the Osaka Tourism Bureau. Nationwide, the drop was 56.7%. Flights from China into Kansai International Airport are down about 70% this winter. Then the rest of the world showed up. Visitors to Osaka from every other country rose about 20%, from 7.9 million to 9.5 million. That filled about two-thirds of the gap China left behind. South Korean passengers at Kansai are running at 125% of last year. Travelers from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are at 110%. Kansai's other international flights are planned to rise 7%. And the rooms got cheaper. In July, midscale hotel rates in Osaka were down 21.7% from a year earlier, according to hotel data firm STR. Total foreign visitors to Osaka are down just 6.9%, against a year when the city hosted the World Expo. Beijing pulled its tourists out of Osaka. Everyone else is paying less to stay there.
