Here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at the night of my Opry debut at the Ryman Auditorium. What most people didn’t see is how many times I came heartbreakingly close to playing the Opry before… only to have it slip away. One time I even called my parents to tell them I was finally going to perform — then had to call back two weeks later and tell them it fell through. After a while, you start guarding your heart. So when this opportunity came, I was honestly scared to believe it was real. My mind ran through every worst-case scenario you can imagine. Maybe something would change. Maybe the show would get shuffled. Maybe the Grand Ole Opry would decide 100 years was long enough and close the doors right before Freeman got there. It sounds dramatic, but it felt real to me. I was hesitant to share it publicly at first. I didn’t want to celebrate too early and have to explain another disappointment. But then I realized… what’s the point of living out your lifelong dream if the people who love you and have supported you the whole way don’t get to be part of it? So if I seem a little humorous at first, just know I was actually very serious. I wouldn’t let myself fully believe it was happening until I was on stage. There’s a moment in this video at the 0:55 mark. I had just finished setting up my steel, everyone had been so kind, and I finally looked up and thought, “Lord… they’re actually going to let me do this.” And in that quiet moment, I felt the Spirit of God gently remind me, “No, Freeman… I’m going to let you do this.” From that moment on, it was everything I had dreamed about and more. And one of the sweetest parts of the whole night… I got to meet Ms. Dale’s favorite singer of all time, Vince Gill. I showed him the photo I carried in my jacket that night — a quiet reminder of where I came from and who helped shape the heart behind the music. Some dreams take a long road. But when the doors finally open… it makes every closed one along the way worth it. #steelguitar #countrymusic #opry #nashville
