Merlin became exactly who he hated because of his devotion to Arthur. In the beginning he always justified himself by saying it'd get better when Arthur became king and brought Magic back but when Arthur became king he changed NOTHING. And Merlin became what Gaius was to Uther. They both betrayed the magical community for the Pendragons. Its so heartbreaking😭💔 Merlin massacred so many magical beings for Arthur.

Love Merlin but he chose to protect the royals over his own people, at the end of the day he did betray his kind. Him and Gaius failed Morgana too made her think she was so alone and insane. Wish he was more of a proper saviour for them instead of saving the odd person here and there

its so truly beautifully heartbreaking to see merlin's transformation from a bright eyed kid with ambition to a sadder, more stoic adult who is so purely devoted to arthur he has forgotten himself

Merlin was such a pretty crier, the writers had to make him do it as much as possible

He literally sacrificed his identity, his self worth, his life, at first for an imaginary kingdom but later on, for Arthur. Gwen was devoted, yes but she never had to be who she wasn’t for Arthur.

Two sides of the same coin, and one side simply lost vision and hope of everything that wasn’t keeping Arthur safe.

Their story is beautiful yet toxic. Arthur became more open and kind while Merlin slowly lost his cheer and got closed off becoming what Arthur could be if they hadn't meet😭
