What keeps a person alive after physical death? Pixar’s Coco begins with a simple story. Miguel is a Mexican boy who dreams of becoming a musician — even though music has been forbidden in his family for generations. During Día de los Muertos, he accidentally enters the Land of the Dead, where he must uncover a forgotten story within his own family in order to return home. But beneath the music, color and comedy is a much deeper idea: Perhaps death is not a single moment. There’s an idea often associated with Mexican reflections on death — sometimes described as the “three deaths.” The first comes when the body stops functioning. The second comes when we physically disappear from the world. But the third is different. The third death comes when your name is spoken for the last time — when no one remembers you anymore. And suddenly, Coco becomes much more than a children’s movie. In the film, memory doesn’t merely honor the dead. Memory sustains existence. Chinese traditions of remembrance and Mexico’s Día de los Muertos are very different — different histories, rituals, symbols and beliefs. Yet beneath those differences is a remarkably human idea: The dead can remain part of the community of the living through memory. Maybe that is why remembrance matters so much across cultures.
