She became Queen Regnant of England, ruled for 44 years, never married, never had children, and never surrendered her sovereignty to a husband. In a society where a woman’s marriage, fertility and ability to produce an heir were matters of state, Elizabeth demonstrated that a woman’s political authority could exist independently of her reproductive body. She revolutionised what the word “QUEEN” could mean. Yet centuries later, one of history’s greatest demonstrations of female sovereignty is still routinely reduced to her virginity, appearance, clothing, supposed eccentricities and romantic life. The woman who ruled is overshadowed by the woman who never married. That is not merely a failure to remember Elizabeth. It is a failure to recognise what she actually proved. If feminism cannot preserve, understand and properly honour one of the earliest and most extraordinary historical demonstrations of female sovereignty, then its problem is deeper than equality. It's not that clear how this particular example is supposed to be the epitome of feminism. Yeah, you need to achieve the top in order to revolutionize, but where does it say a feminist must not marry? You should check out Georgian Queen Tamar's story for example. She was an undoubtedly great ruler and an independent sovereign despite getting married. She divorced, expelled and defeated her husband. So why do you disregard the impact of women rulers just because they were married at some point?
