@calebmorgan7777: United Airlines Flight 232 was a DC-10 flying from Denver toward Chicago on July 19, 1989. While cruising, the aircraft’s tail-mounted No. 2 engine suffered a catastrophic failure, and debris damaged all three hydraulic systems. This meant the pilots essentially lost normal control of the airplane. Captain Al Haynes, First Officer William Records, Flight Engineer Dudley Dvorak, and off-duty DC-10 instructor Dennis Fitch worked together to control the aircraft using differential engine thrust—changing power between the two remaining engines to help steer and control the plane. They managed to reach Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa, and attempted an emergency landing. The aircraft could not be fully controlled during the landing, but the crew’s incredible work helped save many lives. 185 of the 296 people aboard survived, while 111 people died.
