Yet when the Night's Watch called for help, Stannis did what almost every other powerful lord failed to do. He answered. Stannis understood something many of the other claimants did not. The Iron Throne was not the only thing worth fighting for. Beyond the Wall was an existential threat, and the Seven Kingdoms were dangerously unprepared for it. His actions at the Wall also show why Stannis is such a fascinating character in A Song of Ice and Fire. He is harsh, stubborn, demanding, and often ruthless, but he takes duty seriously. He does not need to be loved to do what he believes is right. The man who demanded that Westeros recognize his lawful claim to the Iron Throne was also the man who turned his army north when the Night's Watch needed him. Stannis Baratheon did not answer the call because it promised him an easy victory. He answered because someone had to. The one true king of Westeros was the king who remembered that the realm existed beyond the Iron Throne.
