“The sound of crushing.“ A young survivor described this on a placard at the Ukedo Elementary School Earthquake Ruins. He was retelling the story of how he ran just in time up the hill with his school during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The moment the tsunami arrived, they were all safe on higher ground. All that was left was silence and the sound of crushing! Something about earthquakes is this. The earthquake shaking is not what kills us — it is the fire that may start, or large trees with shallow roots, cars and debris that get washed away by tsunamis. The tsunami swept through Minamisoma, claiming 636 lives. Entire communities were washed away as the sea rose up to 9.3m at some points! This June, over 1,000 of us planted 12,000 trees in Minamisoma. Each tree is part of a Forest Sea Wall. The multi-layer forest structure breaks up and reduces tsunami wave energy. Deep-rooted trees act as a net, catching drifting houses and cars to prevent them from being swept out to sea. The forest serves as a second line of defense behind traditional concrete seawalls, working together to slow or redirect wave energy. This living barrier also buys people time to escape. The vision belongs to Dr. Akira Miyawaki—the ecologist and botanist who developed this method—and Former Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa, who co-founded the Morino Project (Chinju no Mori / Samurai Forest Project). Since 2011, the project has planted over 680,000 trees across Japan's northeastern coast. Dr. Miyawaki himself surveyed the disaster zone immediately after 2011 and insisted: forests can save lives. This project is his living legacy. Thank you very much to everyone for sharing his knowledge 🌿🫀🌿 🌊 This is a forest sea wall. 📍 Minamisoma, Fukushima, Japan 「粉砕する音。」
