International students—save this important New Zealand immigration update! 🎓🇳🇿 From 16 November 2026, eligibility for a Post-Study Work Visa will be extended to certain graduates who: ✅ Completed an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma ✅ Studied the entire qualification full-time in New Zealand ✅ Were enrolled for its full duration, without cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning ✅ Already hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas There is no time limit on when the bachelor’s degree was awarded. An International Qualification Assessment isn’t required, although INZ may check the qualification’s authenticity. ⏳ How long could the visa last? The Post-Study Work Visa may be granted for the period spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year. Graduate Diploma holders who also hold a bachelor’s degree may receive open work conditions. 🎓 Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma An eligible qualification may provide a one-year Post-Study Work Visa, generally requiring at least 30 weeks of full-time study. 🎓 Level 9 Master’s degree An eligible master’s degree may provide a three-year Post-Study Work Visa when at least 30 weeks of full-time study are completed while enrolled in the master’s programme itself. Credits transferred from a Postgraduate Diploma into a master’s programme do not count toward the master’s 30-week study requirement. ⚠️ No bachelor’s degree? You may still qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa if your Graduate Diploma appears on INZ’s eligible-qualifications list. However, you may be required to work in the occupation specified for that qualification. If your qualification isn’t on the list, you may instead be eligible for the new six-month Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, provided you meet its separate requirements. 👨‍👩‍👧 Family applications Post-Study Work Visa holders may support eligible visa applications for their partners and dependent children, as long as all relevant requirements are met. ❗A person can normally receive only one Post-Study Work Visa. Anyone who previously held one isn’t eligible for another. This change doesn’t guarantee approval—every applicant must satisfy all Immigration New Zealand requirements. Save this information and share it with an international student who may be affected! 📌 Source: Immigration New Zealand announcement published 10 September 2026.
