➡️ Part 4 of learning ML from scratch Our network scored 4 out of 4. But it was tested on the same points it learned from. For the first time we hide test points from the model. It never trains on them, and after every pass we grade it on them. A curve with ten weights learns eight noisy points (the pattern behind them is y = x²). After 24 passes the hidden error is at its lowest, 0.05. After 5000 passes the training error is almost zero, but the hidden error has climbed to 0.61: the model learned the noise along with the pattern. Stopping at the best pass is called early stopping. Every real model, from spam filters to ChatGPT, is judged on data it never trained on. 16 lines of pure Python, no libraries. Every number on screen comes from running exactly this code.
