Born in Edinburgh in 1906 to Nigerian doctor Richard Akinwande Savage and Scottish mother Maggie Bowie, Agnes Yewande Savage entered the University of Edinburgh in 1924 after excelling at George Watson’s Ladies’ College. . Her university record was exceptional. She earned first-class honours in every fourth-year subject, won a prize in Diseases of the Skin, and became the first woman at Edinburgh to receive the medal in Forensic Medicine. In 1929, aged just 23, she graduated in medicine and received the Dorothy Gilfillan Memorial Prize for the best woman graduate. . She later joined the colonial medical service in the Gold Coast, where despite her qualifications, she initially worked under unequal “local” terms. In 1931, she moved to Achimota College as medical officer and teacher before later returning to government medical service. . Her work extended into infant welfare, maternity care and the training of nurses at Korle Bu. In 1945, after years of unequal treatment and correspondence with the Colonial Office, she was finally granted the same terms of service, salary and retirement as her European colleagues. . Agnes retired in 1947 and returned to Britain.
