But the evolution of CPO — Co-Packaged Optics — suggests there may be another step in that process. Sometimes scarcity becomes powerful enough that simply producing more of the existing technology is no longer the best answer. Instead, the architecture begins to change. CPO is a fascinating example. Networking is moving physically closer to compute. Optics is becoming more deeply integrated with silicon. And potentially, over time, optical connectivity could extend deeper toward memory itself. The AI stack isn’t simply getting bigger. It is being reorganized. And that changes the question I think investors should ask. It is no longer only: Where will scarcity move next? We should also ask: What will that scarcity force us to redesign? Because identifying a bottleneck is only the beginning. If bandwidth becomes scarce, one opportunity may be to produce more networking capacity within the existing architecture. But another — potentially much more disruptive — opportunity is to change the architecture so fundamentally that the old constraint becomes far less important. And when architecture changes, the location of economic value can change with it. Existing components may lose importance. New components may become strategic. New manufacturing capabilities may become scarce. And entirely new winners can emerge. So perhaps the cycle is becoming clearer: Technological progress creates abundance. Abundance creates new demand. Demand exposes new scarcity. Scarcity attracts capital. But when incremental improvement is no longer enough… scarcity can force architectural change. And architectural change can move value itself. So I would slightly update the question we’ve been asking all week. Don’t only ask: Where will the next bottleneck appear? Ask: What will the next bottleneck force us to redesign — and where will value migrate when it does? AI doesn’t eliminate scarcity. It moves it.
