The baby still had her umbilical cord when Joe found her. April had been born just a few hours earlier, at home and without medical assistance, when her birth mother left her inside a phone booth in Forest Gate, west London. It was the early hours of April 30, 1994, and she was beginning to suffer from hypothermia. Joe Campbell had returned to the spot to call his mother in Guyana and, from a distance, thought there was a fish-and-chips wrapper on the floor. When he got closer, he saw it was a baby and called the police. Joe didn’t disappear after the rescue. He asked about “baby April,” visited her, brought her gifts, and sent her cards every birthday. When she was adopted at age 7, social services asked him to stop contacting her. Twenty-two years passed before April made a public appeal to find him. Joe showed up in less than 24 hours, and when they saw each other, they hugged as if all that time had never passed. Ever since, she has considered him a father, and his children are her siblings. April is a mother now, too, and wants to give back some of what she received. Joe is 62, has undergone two knee replacements, and still works despite the pain, so she started a fundraiser to help him retire. She has already raised more than £18,000. “He gave me a chance to live,” she said. Now she wants the man who found her that early morning to finally be able to rest.
