We’re NOT the same as far as ethnicity and culture. Black Americans have been in the United States of America during the 1500s BEFORE the inception of this country in 1776. Puerto Ricans moved to the United States of America post WWII during the 1940s & 1950s and were placed in “Black” Afro American/Black American/Soulaani neighborhoods. Just because you have CLOSED proximity to a certain ethnic group (Black Americans, Afro Americans, Soulaani) doesn’t make you that ethnic group. Let’s respect each other’s ethnicities and culture.

The real conversation that we need to have is for all of us to stop using that word. It's a slur word. It was used by racist white people so I don't understand why so many people want to have ownership of that. It's crazy to me now in 2026 that you're fighting over a word that is literally bad and puts all of us down and I'm from New York.

I’m black puertorrican and fat joe is a white puertorrican that has mulato/ mestizo relatives. He is not fully white but he is not mestizo either or Afro- boricua …. Ppl need to understand that puertorrican is not a race , is a nationality! We even have Chinese- Ricans ppl here in the island. We have black, white European and Palestinians/ Arab puertorricans here for centuries in the island. Is more complex that just saying “ puertorricans are black”

I’m a black Puerto Rican from NYC who grew up using the word. It took one black American coworker when I was in my 30s to tell me that he didn’t like that I said the word to make me rethink everything. At first I did argue the same boat different stop, but after thinking about it, I chose to stop using the word. He was uncomfortable so I respected his opinion. I don’t know why respect is so hard to give for some ppl.
