@rpn: Why do Japanese companies often manufacture such a wide variety of unrelated products? I’d always been curious so I decided to dig in. And well… it’s because their corporate structures prioritize long-term survival and core technical skills over short-term quarterly profits. Unlike typical Western corporations driven by outside shareholders demanding immediate stock returns, Japanese firms are often managed to keep the company and its workers secure for decades. This collection of skills and deep expertise compound over time, so these companies can just build whatever the next thing is in-house, instead of spinning off into new companies. For example, Fujifilm developed such deep process mastery in chemical coatings from camera film to manufacture LCD flat screens and cosmetics. Now, the American system is best for frontier discovery and innovation. But, one can make the argument that it’s only so effective because it relies on the slower system. #japan #business
