@studioolafureliasson: Olafur Eliasson created the artwork ‘The purple sun for Hildur’, 2026, for the cover of Icelandic composer @Hildur_Gudnadottir’s new album, ‘This Will Be Us’. The album will be released on 23 October 2026, with a launch event at the Philharmonie Berlin – Kammermusiksaal on 25 October 2026. The work is part of Olafur's recent and ongoing exploration of alcohol-based inks, a medium that is notable for its vivid hues and propensity to spread. The concentric rings, which progress from green on the outside of the canvas to a purple, pupil-like ellipse at the centre, were created with the aid of a revolving table similar to a pottery wheel or turntable. As the horizontal canvas spins steadily about its central axis, Olafur adds successive layers of ink and isopropyl alcohol to the surface to arrive at the striated composition. Olafur's technique de-hierarchises the paintings: there is no up or down, no left or right, bottom or top, beginning or end. They grow outwards from the centre rather than in relation to the edges of a rectilinear frame, suggesting continual growth and expansion.
