According to the aviation statistics agency Cirium, about 1,900 UK flights were cancelled on September 8 and Wednesday, September 9. The knock-on delays are expected to last a few days as aircraft and crew return to where they need to be. Nats, the air traffic control provider, blamed an error with the flight processing system for the outage, which lasted about four hours. Even a small outage can cause widespread disruption to flight operations. The bad news is that passengers aren’t due any compensation, as it falls into what airlines term “extraordinary circumstances”, alongside issues such as strikes, airspace closures or bad weather.
