@the_studycoach: I used to study for hours and retain maybe 20 percent of it. Now I study less and remember almost everything, and nothing changed except I stopped doing these 5 things. I stopped rereading my notes. It feels productive because your brain recognizes the words, but recognition isn't memory. Now I read once, close everything, and write down what I remember. What I missed becomes my actual study list. I stopped highlighting. It tricks your brain into thinking it learned something, when really you just decorated the page. Now I read a section, close the book, and explain it in a few sentences like I'm teaching someone. If I can't explain it simply, I didn't actually understand it. I stopped trying to memorize things I didn't understand yet. Your brain isn't built to store words, it's built to store meaning, and pushing through confusion just means nothing sticks. Now I ask myself honestly if I actually get it before moving forward. I stopped writing word for word during lectures. That kept me in copy mode instead of thinking mode. Now I only jot down what confuses me, then rewrite everything from memory afterward, in my own words, which is where the real learning happens. I stopped pulling all-nighters. Your brain stores memories during sleep, not during the studying itself. Skipping sleep means skipping the storage step entirely, no matter how productive it felt in the moment. These 5 changes stopped me from working against how my own brain was actually built to learn.
