Sumitomo Electric developed a special optical fiber containing 19 separate cores, allowing many streams of information to travel through the fiber simultaneously. Yet the fiber's outer cladding diameter is just 0.125 millimeters — the standard diameter used by existing optical-fiber infrastructure. Think of regular fiber like a highway. Instead of making the highway massively wider, researchers basically figured out how to fit many more data lanes inside the same overall space. NICT also developed technology capable of amplifying signals across all 19 cores so the enormous amount of data could survive the 1,808-kilometer journey. Previous petabit-class demonstrations using standard-diameter multicore fiber had generally been limited to much shorter distances. ⚠️ But there’s an important catch: This does NOT mean people in Japan currently have 1-petabit home internet. This was an advanced experimental optical communications system using specialized fiber, transmitters, amplifiers and receiving equipment. Your phone, router, computer and internet provider couldn't suddenly handle this speed even if this fiber ran past your house. But the breakthrough matters because global data demand keeps exploding from cloud computing, streaming, AI systems, data centers and future communications networks. And researchers are already pushing fiber even further. NICT has demonstrated other experimental systems reaching multiple petabits per second using different fiber designs, showing just how much potential may still be hiding inside strands of glass barely thicker than a human hair.
