Something AI has done for me is show me the “lore” that I never found in popular physics books. I’ve realized since then that there is a huge difference in understanding between the physicist doing theoretical work and a physicists in a lab. The latter are like middle-managers who gatekeep, the bane of my existence.

So what I'm hearing is if you're an independent researcher your words mean nothing unless somebody inside the community is willing to look at your papers with any sort of credibility. Sounds more like gatekeeping than it does education.

Shed academia like the plague it is, it constrains physics more than helps it at this point. Thousands of dollars people must pay to enter social clubs of research abandons core principles of research itself.

im trying to stay in academia so bad but the money isnt there and in America the opportunities are legit vanishing at the PhD level so my livelihood is getting threatened deeper each year which is just brutal right now for astrophysics

You call it lore. In industry, I've called it tribal knowledge. But yes, I'm pursuing a PhD in engineering pseudo-independently (online, independent research) and can attest to much of the challenges you mentioned.
