How Muslim Spain Heated Baths With Hidden Floors. A thousand years ago, Muslim engineers in Al-Andalus built hammams with an advanced heating system that worked without electricity. At baths like the famous one in Ronda, a single furnace heated water for bathing and also sent heat beneath the floor. Builders raised a second floor on small brick pillars, leaving empty space below it. Hot air and smoke moved through that hidden space and warmed the floor above. The rooms were arranged by temperature too. The hot room stood closest to the furnace, the warm room was placed a bit farther away, and the cool room was farthest from the heat source. Wall flues then carried the smoke upward and out, so the bathers received the warmth without sitting in smoke.
