@juniperautumnherbal: Some trees were never just trees. 🌿 Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna / C. laevigata) has held a particularly sacred place in Celtic and Irish folklore. She was deeply associated with fairies and the Otherworld, and with liminal spaces where one world was believed to meet another. In the Ogham tradition, hawthorn is Huath, associated with transformation, protection, liminality, and challenge. Hawthorn was a tree to be respected. Her branches were used in folk charms for protection, and while her flowers were celebrated around Beltane and May Day, associated with fertility, passion, and love, bringing hawthorn blossoms inside the home was traditionally considered taboo. What I find especially beautiful is how her folklore and medicine keep circling around the same themes: The heart. Protection. Love. Grief. In folk medicine, the berries were used for “dropsy,” referring to fluid retention associated with heart failure, while the leaves were regarded as a cardiac tonic. Today, I think of hawthorn as a cardiovascular trophorestorative, supporting the heart and circulatory system over time. But her relationship with the heart isn’t entirely physical. Hawthorn is also one of my favorite herbs for the emotional heart, especially grief, heartbreak, and deep sadness. A thorn-covered tree associated with protection and boundaries. Flowers associated with love and fertility. Folklore placing her at the threshold of another world. And medicine deeply connected to the heart.
