@finelinesandfreckles: This was such a simple thing and I was SO embarrassed to not know how to do it! I’ve done far more complicated things since becoming a RN but there’s a first time for everything 🫣Please please do not let others on social media or on the floor make you feel less then for not knowing/asking questions…it’s normal and the nurse who pretends to know everything is a dangerous one. #newgradnurse #rn #nursingschoolmom #losangeles #singlemom

Another tip: if they are short infusions (example: ofirmev in 15 mins.) run that real quick while you prep all your other meds. Then when you y-site run the faster meds (not infusion time but higher rate or ml/hr) closet to the patient. If you are running pressors or sedation this is especially important.

if you're using epic , lexicomp shows you what's y site compatible.

I spiked through bag of LR in my capstone and I don’t even know how. I felt dumb as shit - I’m 41 and it’s like my preceptor thinks I shouldn’t make mistakes

I also didn’t really know about y-siting either until I learned about it on orientation. We had to give magnesium and potassium at the same time, so we were able to y-site both into a line of fluids due to lack of iv site options we couldn’t do them separately since he also had amiodarone in another line. I feel like I never learned anything about y-siting in nursing school!! You’re definitely not alone :) -fellow new grad

Nursing school never prepares you for the real job that’s why you count on your experience Nurses to help the young ones and hopefully they’re very kind and do that like I am. I love teaching new grads that lay of the land.

Nothing is obvious if you’ve not done it before. The safe nurse asks questions. Good job!

Nursing school taught us textbook. When I started my first nursing job, so many nurses told me you learn real world nursing once you get in the field.

Almost 10 years here, many different hospitals and specialties. You will always learn as a nurse and that’s one of the best parts of this career. My biggest advice is never be afraid to ask questions! Good job on being humble and sharing!

Doesn’t matter how long you’ve been at it, there will be a day that makes you feel like an idiot. But you really do learn something new everyday.

I didn’t know the cardiac monitor had an untrue reading labeled “artifact.” More adv nurses just kept saying my patient in afib to vfib rhythm was fine (severe body spasms). I cried to bad thought we were gonna just let my patient die 😭 … I waited to cry til after but pt held my hand screaming “help me” as if she was dying. - 3months off orientation…….
