@wasatchroyals: For educational purposes: Have you ever heard of or seen this procedure done before? This is a temporary tarsorrhaphy. A tarsorrhaphy is when a veterinarian temporarily sutures the upper and lower eyelids partially or completely together. This protects the cornea and creates a protected environment so an ulcer, injury, or surgical site can heal. The button is commonly used as a stent/bolster for the sutures. The sutures pass through or around the button so the tension is distributed over a larger area instead of the suture cutting into the delicate eyelid tissue. After a period of healing—often roughly 1–3 weeks depending on the problem—the veterinarian removes the sutures/button and opens the eyelids to examine the cornea and see how well it has healed. Little Anakin developed a small ulcer that has not improved with topical antibiotics and oral antibiotics. He is now wearing this little button and allowing for natural healing with his eye shut and supportive care over the next couple weeks. Cattery life is a lot of work and cats like all living things just have things happen and we do our best to resolve and treat as soon as we can. We think Anakin will be hopefully looking amazing here in 2 weeks at his checkup but for now we can’t stop singing this song, and he can’t stop being a snuggliest and happiest little guy!
