Jacob Miller was shot in the forehead, left for dead—and lived to tell the story. On September 19, 1863, the Union private from Company K, 9th Indiana Infantry, was wounded at Chickamauga. The Army’s medical history records a projectile lodged in his forehead bone near the nose, fracturing his left eye socket. Miller’s own recollection, published in 1911, places him near Brock Field. His company fell back. When he regained consciousness, he was behind Confederate lines. Using his gun as a walking stick, he worked his way around the Confederate line. Blood covered him so thoroughly that even an officer who knew him failed to recognize him. As his eyes swelled shut, Miller lifted his right eyelid with a finger to find his way. Stretcher bearers eventually carried him to a field hospital. According to Miller, surgeons expected him to die and declined to operate. The following morning, told he was too badly wounded to evacuate, he slipped out of the tent. An ambulance later picked him up. He had escaped the battlefield. The wound would remain part of his life. The Army’s medical record dates the projectile’s removal to June 15, 1864, nearly nine months after Chickamauga. Miller was discharged that September and received a pension. By 1868, an examiner reported diseased bone, a draining wound, impaired sight in his left eye, and disturbances of his mental faculties. In January 1870, another examiner rated his disability total and permanent. Miller later reported a buckshot dropping from the wound 17 years after the battle, followed by two pieces of lead after 31 years. He described constant head pain whenever he was awake. “The whole scene is imprinted on my brain as with a steel engraving,” he wrote. His account was recorded long after the fighting, but the medical reports document the enduring injury. It is an extraordinary survival story—and a reminder that “wounded” in a casualty report could mean a lifetime of suffering.
