Kumasi Sports Stadium, 35,000 people, roughly 150 Ashanti chiefs, and at the center of it, the Asantehene himself, Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, arriving with the Golden Stool. That stool isn't decoration. It's supposed to hold the very soul of the Ashanti nation. And there's a brutal irony in it being brought out to honor a British monarch. Sixty years earlier, in 1900, a British governor demanded to sit on that exact stool, not understanding what it meant, and it triggered the War of the Golden Stool, one of the last armed uprisings against British rule in West Africa. The Ashanti king at the time, Prempeh I, was exiled to the Seychelles for 25 years as punishment for Ashanti resistance. Now here's his successor, Prempeh II, presenting that same sacred stool, not in defiance this time, but in welcome, to the granddaughter of the empire that once exiled his predecessor for defending it.
