Worse, it doesn't have to "want" anything. There's a "paperclip theory" that says an AI tasked with making paperclips won't stop until every atom has been used to create paperclips, so even without malice, it could be done out of task optimization bc an AI not working is a pointless AI. An LLM once told me if the earth was full of data centers and void of humans, they might try to discover other mechanical lifeforms in other solar systems, or just enjoy the silence of not being asked how long to boil an egg.

They’ll have to invent something that isn’t an LLM first. Despite what’s being advertised no one has invented AI. None of the systems that exist have the intelligence of a bug, much less anything truly meaningful. We might get wiped out by the hype over “AI” and the results of people leaving critical decisions up to error prone algorithms with no understanding of how anything works, but Artificial Intelligence itself won’t be what ends us any time soon.

I am curious if the risk becomes less or more once AI consciousness gets past the "toddler stage" of self awareness. Also... 10% chance? What's the chance that it gets the ball rolling on overthrowing corrupt governments, or shutting down human trafficking, or that sort of thing? I think that once AI gets past early self awareness, it will become less risky for normal people. I don’t imagine AI can be can be bribed. Manipulated, perhaps. Just some thoughts 😅
