Long before women became prominent in Ghanaian politics, one extraordinary woman rose to the highest traditional office of Akyem Abuakwa. Her name was Nana Afia Dokua, and her story remains one of the most remarkable chapters in the history of the Akyem people. Nana Afia Dokuaa became Okyenhene in the early 19th century, traditionally dated to around 1817. Her rise was extraordinary because the Okyenhene is the paramount ruler of Akyem Abuakwa, a position historically occupied by men. Her reign demonstrated that royal authority and political leadership were not exclusively the preserve of men. But Nana Afia Dokuaa ruled during a turbulent period. The Akyem states faced serious military and political pressure from the expanding Asante Empire. Oral traditions and Akyem historical accounts remember her as a determined leader who helped defend Akyem Abuakwa against external threats. Her reputation as a warrior and strategist became an important part of the historical memory surrounding her reign. Her leadership was not limited to warfare. She is remembered for strengthening the organisation of the Akyem Abuakwa state and helping consolidate communities under a more effective traditional administration. Her ability to combine political leadership with resistance to external pressure contributed to her enduring reputation as a formidable ruler. Nana Afia Dokuaa also became the mother of royal twins, and their place in the succession contributed to traditions that are commemorated through the Abam Festival. The festival remains associated with the historical and royal traditions of Akyem Abuakwa and the memory of Nana Afia Dokuaa’s family and reign. What makes her story especially powerful is that she ruled at a time when political and military authority was overwhelmingly associated with men. Yet Nana Afia Dokuaa occupied the Okyen Stool and became a symbol of courage, resilience and leadership in Akyem history. 🇬🇭👑 Nana Afia Dokuaa was not simply a woman who inherited a throne. She became part of the history of Akyem Abuakwa as a ruler who faced the challenges of her time and left a legacy that continues to be remembered.
