Jon Stewart’s opening of his first episode after 9/11 makes me cry every time I watch it.

It reminds me of just how many tv shows never really talk about Covid directly. Which honestly I’m glad for

Music was edited as well. The lyrics, "blow up like the world trade" in Biggie's 1994, "Juicy" was removed for years.

Can somebody explain why a lot of shows would go back to their unaired episodes and edit the towers out? It never made sense. It was already filmed and they WERE there at the time. Was it just like a sensitivity thing ? I’m curious.

Spider-Man (2002) also has a lot of imagery. Green Goblin flies through the Macey’s Parade on his glider, Spider-Man swings past the American flag at the end, New Yorkers fight back against Green Goblin on the bridge.

Lilo and Stitch changed the spaceship chase scene background. it was originally intended to fly through a city, but was redone to fly through the countryside.

Thank you for mentioning how children’s media handled teaching kids how to cope with tragedy! Arthur had a great episode similar to Sesame Street’s where all the students are affected differently by a fire breaking out in the school.

I remember the Disney channel had an in between shows bit called “express yourself” and they had Disney stars talk about 911

Wait why erase / remove the towers and the memory of them? Isn’t that like erasing what happened? Or was it to like honor them? Seems odd but maybe I’m seeing it wrong!

I was 9 and faked a stomach ache to stay home from school. I was cuddled up on my couch watching Nickelodeon trying to go back do sleep when my barged in and turned the channel and it was just in time to see the second plane hit. The rest of the day almost every cable channel has a message that they were taking a break to honor the tragedy. I’ve never seen anything like it since.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch incorporated red white and blue into the wardrobe after, I want to say multiple times instead of just one episode but it's been a while since I rewatched

I remember loops of Disney channel stars in American flag outfits and little blurbs people submitted online about being united and their thoughts on 9/11. I was 10 years old.

I saw somewhere that they change Lilo and stitch because the scene was originally a plane being stolen by Jumba and it dodges in between sky scrapers and they changed it to a space ship going between mountains.

Nick News with Linda Ellerby (which was a fantastic resource overall) also aired a really great special right after 9/11

thinking about how the show NCIS was basically made as a response to 9/11 and how the first episode features a hijacked plane being heroically rescued

i wasn’t alive at the time so maybe someone can explain to me, but why would they remove images of the towers? wouldn’t they want them to be remembered? to me it would seem like letting them win to take them away but obviously culture shifts

I thought it was interesting in SVU in later episodes there are comments on how things changed. How beats were different, how certain job sectors were having a hard time finding work, things like that. It wasn't subtle but it was respectful.

Bones had an episode in 2012 with the characters reflecting on 9/11 that has aged poorly in some respects, but at the time really affected me.
