Suriname’s Ambassador to Ghana, Fidelia Graand-Galon, highlights the remarkable cultural connections that have survived between her country and West Africa. During the transatlantic slave trade, enslaved Africans were forcibly taken to Suriname, carrying with them languages, traditions, food, spirituality and cultural practices from their homelands. Centuries later, traces of that heritage remain visible, including connections to Akan-speaking communities in present-day Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Separated by an ocean and generations of history, some cultural ties endured.
