@coach__bm: Carbs are one of the most powerful tools you have for building muscle.
Used correctly, they drive recovery, refill glycogen, and create a highly anabolic environment.
Used poorly (wrong timing + low activity), you simply leave most of that muscle-building potential on the table. It comes down to two things:
how lean and insulin-sensitive you are, and when you eat them. Insulin is the traffic director for the glucose in your blood.
In an insulin-sensitive person with trained, glycogen-depleted muscles, that bowl of rice gets pulled straight into muscle cells. Insulin does its job well: it drives glucose and amino acids into the muscle, supporting growth and recovery. The more muscle you carry, the more of this “refill” capacity you have — which is why lean, trained guys can handle (and benefit from) higher carb intakes. When muscles are full, activity is low, and insulin sensitivity is compromised, glucose stays elevated longer. The body has to work harder with insulin, and the anabolic window for those carbs shrinks. You’re no longer maximizing the muscle-building signal you could have gotten. The goal is simple: keep your muscles hungry for glucose.
That’s when insulin becomes strongly anabolic instead of just a background storage signal. When should you eat carbs?
If you’re sedentary and not training, you don’t need big carb loads — you simply don’t have the demand.
If you train and stay active, time the majority of your carbs during and after training. In that window your muscles have already contracted and glycogen is lower, so glucose is taken up preferentially through GLUT4 transporters with a smaller insulin requirement. The result is better partitioning into muscle and faster recovery. How to make carbs maximally anabolic 1. Get leaner (roughly 12–15% body fat for most men is a sweet spot for high insulin sensitivity). 2. Do high-intensity, glycogen-depleting training that actually contracts the muscles hard. 3. Prioritize sleep and manage stress — one bad night is enough to blunt insulin sensitivity. Carbs aren’t the enemy.
Timed and used correctly they are training fuel, a recovery driver, and part of the anabolic environment that lets you build more muscle over the year. I break down exactly how to turn your body into a carb-utilizing machine (timing, amounts, and the full framework) in my Performance Nutrition guide. Comment “carb” and I’ll send it.
