@drb_unfiltered: I love seeing research dig deeper into female brain health. I do NOT love watching important studies get turned into fear based content because someone skimmed a title, grabbed a scary phrase, and decided accuracy was optional. Research on puberty, pregnancy, menopause, hormones, and the brain are VERY important but it only helps us if we understand what the paper can TRULY say. Misinformation doesn’t empower girls, women, or AFAB people. It makes us more scared, more confused, and easier to dismiss. I want us to celebrate the research, share the research and talk about the research but please read it first. I haven't looked at the research myself, but from your explanation, it seems like this study supports the idea of "pregnancy brain" (like putting car keys in the fridge and losing them) because the brain is reorganizing itself or pruning and did not consult the user to schedule a convenient time for maintenance. It doesn't mean that the person is dumb, their brain is just restructuring neuropathways to "make space" while juggling a multitude of other complex operations in the background that it is more likely to misfire while it's multitasking

my 6 years of unchecked perimenopause because no one listened... I thought I had early onset dementia,it was terrifying. HRT fixed that for me. We have to talk about this way more.

My husband‘s only ever been through one change and that is puberty and he still can’t find anything even if it’s right in front of him on a counter. Yet my body’s been through three major transformations, and I still know where everything is and I still have to remember everything about everything so I still have more gray matter. I still processed faster and better.[Tears of joy]

So our brains reorganize for different phases of life. This makes sense.
Thank you

The way I read it was our brains clean out all the useless shit like we clean out our computers trash can and do software updates.

I think that our brains simply reorganize.

As an amateur gardener, I love the idea of “pruning” the brain! Pruning seems harsh at first, but good gardeners know that cutting back a plant in some places is a necessary step to improve a plant’s health! It opens up areas that were covered to receive more sunlight and stimulate growth, while eliminating damaged or sick parts so that you can direct more energy to that healthy growth! I love this metaphor as I’m nearing the end of perimenopause.

Menopause is a nightmare. HRT helps but of all my many struggles, menopause turned my world upside down.

I’ve always felt that we get “dumber” in our early 20s from our teens (~20-24), not just due to my own experiences, but listening to others from different walks of life too. A reorganization would be an interesting aspect to study and why our brains kind of “mature” (not the right word, I’m typing tired atm) from 25 onward.

How does it change when someone goes through all 3 events vs only 2 of them? I ask because if you look at differences between the first and second events, then I would think it’d be different going through only the 1st and 3rd. And with so many more women choosing not to have children, it’d be interesting to see how that differs (as well as multiple pregnancies)
