As a therapist who specializes in relationship repair, my post revealed just how much hurt and disconnection there is between so many sisters. And if I’m being honest, this is an area where I’ve been really blessed. My big sister has always been extremely kind to me. She has taken care of me like I’m her own child, and I literally cannot remember her ever saying anything mean to me. So I recognize that my experience is not everybody’s experience. Because in my work, I sit with people who have experienced betrayal, disappointment, rejection, and even abuse in their relationships with their sisters. And when you’ve been hurt deeply by someone you love, especially someone you feel like should have been safe, it can be really hard to overcome that. But I’ve also seen people get through really hard things. I’ve seen relationships that may never become 100% of what someone wanted them to be, but they got better. And I always have hope that things can get better when both people are willing to allow their hearts to change. That’s actually one of the biggest things I look for when I’m working with people: heart change. So my prayer for sisters is that God would change hearts. That we would be willing to humble ourselves. That we would be willing to take accountability where we need to. That we would learn how to love one another better. And that where there has been hurt, there can eventually be healing and repair. And I also want to be clear that sometimes separation is necessary. Sometimes you need boundaries. Sometimes there are seasons where distance is the healthiest and safest thing you can do. Repair does not mean ignoring what happened, removing boundaries, or putting yourself back into an unsafe situation. But I also don’t want us to lose hope that things can get better. Maybe it doesn’t happen overnight. Maybe the relationship never looks exactly like you thought it would. But my prayer is that somehow, little by little, we can get 1% better. And maybe that 1% is simply a conversation. Maybe it’s an apology. Whatever 1% better looks like for you, that’s my prayer.
