I know I should be happy for you—I promised I’d always root for your happiness—but my chest hurts so badly it’s hard to breathe. I keep thinking about last winter when we sat in your car for three hours just talking. You told me nobody understood you like I did. Was that real, or was I just filling time until you met them? Jan paused, thumb hovering, before hitting Delete. Jan opened the direct messaging app. The chat for Jingjing was pinned at the top. The last message sent was three days ago. Jingjing: Hey, are you free this weekend? I really want you to meet them! They’re super excited to meet my best friend. Jan: I have a huge exam coming up, Jing! So sorry, I’ll have to pass. But I’m so happy for you!! ☺️ Jan tapped the message box. Unsent Message: I didn’t have an exam. I couldn’t sit across a table and watch you look at someone else the way I’ve spent four years praying you’d look at me. I love you, Jingjing. I’ve loved you since the day we met. And it’s killing me. Jan’s thumb trembled over the Send arrow. Just send it. Just let it burn. Instead, Jan backspaced every single character until the box was empty again. Three months later, notifications came in rapid succession. Jingjing: Jan, where are you? Jingjing: You missed your exam today. Everyone’s looking for you. Jingjing: Please answer your phone. You’re scaring me. When Jingjing couldn't reach Jan, panic set in. Jingjing used the spare key hidden under the mat and unlocked Jan’s apartment door. The apartment was freezing. On the dining table sat Jan’s phone, unlocked, beside a handwritten note: “Jingjing, if you’re reading this, I left my laptop charger at your place. You can keep it. Everything else on here is for you.” Hands shaking, Jingjing picked up the phone. It was open to the [DO NOT SEND] folder. Draft #.02 — Nov 14 You fell asleep on my shoulder during the movie. I didn't move for two hours because I didn’t want to wake you up. I hope you never figure out why my heart was beating so fast. Draft #.18 — Aug 03 You cried today about how nobody ever stays.
