This concept landed for me when I got into ETH at $50, Solana at $8 and now SUI. No one here knows a single thing about the teams behind their token, the demand on the other side, or even whether there is true product-market fit. And why would you? You’re not a VC. You don’t get to meet these people. So you have to base your decisions on things you can actually see. The most observable, for me, are the Layer 1s because you’re not relying on some future event or narrative to drive the price up. ETH has around 9,300 active monthly developers, Solana 3,700 and SUI 1,400, with SUI the fastest growing of the three over the last two years. So you can see something observable happening in real time. The developers create the apps. The apps attract the users. The users buy and use the token and generate fees. That activity creates demand for the network. It’s beyond simple. But too many people buy into a narrative of what something is going to do. “My token is going to take over this system.” “It’s going to be used for this.” I’m sorry, but that is not a clear investing thesis. You don’t know the time horizon, the capability of the team, the regulations they’ll face or whether there will actually be demand on the other side. Whereas with the L1s, you can see the rate of growth. It doesn’t always align with token price immediately, but at least you can see something happening. And the true beauty of the L1 is that, yes, it captures the value, but you can also see what’s happening a few steps ahead. That gives you the opportunity to dive in earlier or go more beta with your investment. It’s worked for me over a few cycles now, and I’m handing the framework to you on a silver platter.
